Fri(end)s by V of BTS

On March 15, 2024, BTS member V, also known as Kim Taehyung, unveiled his latest solo effort, "FRI(END)S". This Pop Soul R&B track marks V's first release since his debut solo album "Layover" in September 2023.

More than just a catchy tune, "FRI(END)S" explores the beautiful complexities of love that can blossom from friendship. The song's visuals, coupled with an interesting theory, offer a deeper look into the potential narrative.

MY THEORY

The music video portrays V, possibly referencing V himself, in the initial throes of a new relationship.

Blinded by the initial rush of love, V and his partner seem blissfully unaware of the complications surrounding other couples. This resonates with the real-life phenomenon of heightened serotonin levels during the "honeymoon phase," which can create a rose-tinted view of love and blind us to potential problems.

As the relationship progresses, however, the carefree atmosphere depicted in the video may transition into a portrayal of changing dynamics.

Arguments may arise, even the ones that weren't present during their friendship. This second death symbolizes the inevitable shift that occurs when friends become romantic partners.

As time progresses V finds himself surrounded by seemingly happy couples and he begins to perceive his own relationship as uniquely troubled. This highlights the potential for isolation and frustration that can arise when comparing our struggles to the seemingly perfect facades of others.

The first death could symbolise the demise of the relationship due to the negativity that has crept in. The final scene shows V alone with himself again, reflecting on the loss but ultimately finding himself.
