Even though Brandon Sanderson writes his books & releases them at a lightning speed, I still finish reading them faster. After reading all of the Cosmere books, I was craving more. So I decided to give Cytoverse a chance. And how happy I’m that I finally did.
Brandon Sanderson's Skyward is a masterful blend of science fiction, adventure, and coming-of-age themes. Set on a planet under constant threat from alien invaders, the novel follows Spensa Nightshade, a young woman determined to become a pilot and defy societal expectations.
One of the Sanderson's greatest strengths is his richly detailed world-building. Detritus, the planet where the story unfolds, is a fascinating setting with its underground cities, advanced technology, and constant threat of alien invasion. Sanderson's ability to create a believable and immersive world is evident throughout the book. The author skillfully weaves together elements of science fiction and historical fiction, creating a unique and engaging setting.
Initially I didn’t like Spensa at all. But that’s the point of the character. She is written to portray the often rebellious nature of her age that leads to sometimes disastrous outcomes. She faces challenges both personal and societal, and her growth throughout the story is a highlight. Her determination to prove herself, despite the obstacles she faces, is both admirable and motivating.
Skyward explores deeper themes beyond the surface-level action and adventure. The novel delves into issues such as courage, loyalty, and sacrifice. Spensa's unwavering dedication to her friends and her belief in what is right are central to her character development. The story also examines the consequences of war and the sacrifices that must be made to protect one's home.
In addition to its strong character development and thought-provoking themes, Skyward is also a thrilling adventure. The action sequences are intense and well-executed, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The interstellar dogfights and battles against the alien invaders provide a sense of excitement and danger that propels the story forward.
Skyward is a must-read for fans of science fiction and adventure. It's a captivating story that will keep you engaged from beginning to end. Whether you're a fan of science fiction or simply looking for a great read, Skyward is a novel that will not disappoint.
Amazon Blurb of "Skyward"
Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.
